I remember it as clearly as if it were happening right this minute… It was August 8, 1988 and I was staring at the metal gate. Watching as it slowly opened to the street. The sky was crystal clear… not a cloud to be seen. I stepped into the street and took a huge cleansing breath. I was free…

For the past 12 months I had been living under someone else’s control. They told me when I would go to sleep, when I would wake up, when I would eat. After being locked up for 12 months I was finally free.

I had no home anymore… they don’t hold your apartment for you when you are in jail. I had $40 to my name, and no job. I hailed a taxi and asked him to take me as far north of the city as he could for $20. My plan was to hitch hike the rest of the 250 miles to my grandmother’s home and stay with her until I could figure out my next steps.

I remember walking along the highway. I had a lot of time to think. The one thought that kept echoing in my head… was… “How the hell did I get here? This was not the life I imagined I was going to have when I was a kid”.

As a kid I had big dreams… I was going to be a famous singer. I used to draw pictures of me standing in front of a marquis at Carnegie Hall in NYC with my name in lights. And I did sing… I started out singing in public when I was 6 years old. At 15, I started making a living as the lead singer of a rock band. I had lead roles in all the school productions… My whole life I had big dreams about being a famous musician. And here I was… mentally, emotionally, spiritually, physically and financially destroyed.

You see I lost my left leg to cancer when I was 8 years old. To the outside world, they thought I dealt with it pretty well. I mean, I lettered in both high school wrestling and football. I became the first licensed amputee motorcyclist in PA. Hell I even had my very own business by the time I was 19. And I was always singing…

But inside… I was a mess. When I was with my own thoughts… I was filled with anger… I had no self esteem… I knew there must be something wrong with me. I had to be a monster… evil… something. Why else would God take away my leg? I was just a little kid.

I started drinking heavily when I was 13 years old. Getting drunk became my way to shut off the voices in my head. And for the next 11 years I didn’t last more than 3 days without some form of alcohol or a drug in my system.

19 years old and I had my first business. 20 years old, I had 5 arrests for drunk driving and was facing 5-8 years in jail. How the hell did I get here?

Well I was free now. And I swore… I would never drink again. Less than 12 months later… I woke up in a jail cell in Pennsauken, NJ. Drunk Driving charge #6.
